About Somiedo Natural Park

Somiedo Natural Park, located in the Principality of Asturias in northern Spain, encompasses a rugged mountainous landscape formed by the Cantabrian Mountains. Spanning over 29,000 acres, it is one of the most important natural reserves in the region, known for its spectacular glacial valleys, pristine lakes, lush beech forests, and high mountain pastures. The park's terrain features steep slopes, rocky peaks, and a wealth of biodiversity, creating a haven for wildlife including the endangered Cantabrian brown bear, wolves, roe deer, and capercaillie. The park is also home to traditional mountain villages such as Pola de Somiedo and Veigas where local culture and rural pastoral lifestyles are preserved. Somiedo is recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve due to its ecological value and sustainable land use practices. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to its extensive network of hiking trails that provide routes to scenic viewpoints, ancient stone shepherd huts, and crystal-clear lakes like Lago del Valle, the largest natural lake in the region. Visitors can enjoy hiking, wildlife watching, mountain biking, fishing, and horseback riding. The park's seasonal changes offer a diverse experience, from wildflower bloom in spring to vibrant autumn foliage and snow-covered winter landscapes. Somiedo's combination of ecological richness, cultural heritage, and breathtaking scenery makes it a treasured destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.
